CORPUS CHRISTI — Selena fans will remember the slain singer with song, dance and a candlelight vigil Thursday during the 16th annual Selena Tribute and Showcase.
Held years past in front of Selena’s mural on the side of a convenience store in her old Molina neighborhood, this year it will be nearby from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Molina Veterans Park, 1150 Bloomington St.
It’s a bigger venue and organizers have plans for a bigger tribute.
“We’re paying our respects to the memory of Selena,” tribute host Sylvia Dancer said. “She’s gone but never forgotten.”
Expect to see performances by Lorissa Chapa, who portrayed Selena in the musical “Selena Forever,” 11-year-old singer Marissa Cortez of San Antonio, and countless fans performing their own tributes during the show’s open-mic.
At dusk there will be a candlelight vigil in Selena’s memory, 16 years to the day after she was gunned down in a Corpus Christi motel.
“Elvis was the king or rock and roll, Michael Jackson was the king of pop,” Dancer said. “Selena is our queen — the queen of Latin music.”
